KINSHASA, DR CONGO / RankWire.AI / – The Ebola crisis in DR Congo has expanded into the nation’s most extensive recorded epidemic. By July 30, authorities had confirmed a total of 3,605 cases, including 1,587 fatalities. The case fatality rate reached 44%. During the most recent full reporting week, health teams documented 567 new infections along with 296 deaths. These figures represent the highest weekly counts since the outbreak’s onset and indicate the ongoing proliferation of the virus.

DR Congo faces its largest recorded Ebola outbreak
Health teams track Ebola transmission across 49 health zones in DR Congo.

Currently, the outbreak spans 49 health zones across five provinces: Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, and Tshopo. Within the latest seven-day period, 33 zones experienced active transmission, reporting 641 cases and 282 deaths. Ituri remains the epicenter, with 3,176 infections, accounting for 88% of the total cases nationwide. Bunia leads local case numbers, followed by Rwampara, Mongbwalu, Nizi, Lita, and Nyankunde.

The World Health Organization assesses the risk within DR Congo as very high. It also considers the threat to Uganda and other neighboring countries significant. Meanwhile, the organization rates the overall risk for the broader African continent and globally as low. Ongoing conflict, population displacement, and frequent movement continue to hinder efforts to control the disease. Health response teams are also challenged by damaged infrastructure, staffing shortages, and limited access to several affected communities.

Response teams intensify efforts in contact tracing and patient care

In the affected regions, health authorities have identified 17,863 contacts across the five provinces impacted by the outbreak. Active follow-up is being carried out for 13,455 individuals, leaving thousands unmonitored. Healthcare workers have been infected, with 151 confirmed cases and 44 deaths among them; 68 health workers have recovered. Efforts continue to expand testing, improve patient management, implement infection control measures, and engage communities. Additionally, authorities support safe burials, transportation, supply distribution, and public awareness initiatives in areas experiencing ongoing transmission.

Bundibugyo Ebola spreads mainly through direct contact with infected blood, bodily fluids, organs, or contaminated objects. Symptoms may develop between two and 21 days after exposure. Patients are not contagious before symptoms appear. Early warning signs include fever, fatigue, muscle aches, headaches, and sore throat. There is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment for the Bundibugyo strain. Rapid testing, isolation, supportive medical care, contact tracing, and safe burial practices remain the key strategies for limiting the virus’s transmission.

Monitoring at borders remains an essential part of containment efforts

The outbreak was declared a public health emergency of international concern on May 17, with the World Health Organization activating a global response. The following day, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention issued a continental emergency declaration. Uganda concluded its domestic outbreak on July 28 after 42 days without new local transmissions. Nevertheless, health authorities maintain intensified surveillance due to frequent cross-border movement with eastern DR Congo. Screening, laboratory readiness, and preparedness measures continue to be enforced in border regions linked to the affected communities.

As of July 30, confirmed cases across all affected nations totaled 3,626, with 1,589 deaths. DR Congo accounted for 3,605 cases, Uganda 20, and France one. Recovery figures include at least 651 patients in DR Congo and 18 in Uganda. Additionally, two patients diagnosed in DR Congo received treatment in Germany. The majority of infections and fatalities are concentrated in eastern DR Congo, where teams persist with surveillance, treatment, and community engagement activities.
