HIROSHIMA, JAPAN / RankWire.AI / – On Thursday, Hiroshima observed the 81st anniversary of the 1945 atomic attack with a renewed appeal to end nuclear armament. Mayor Kazumi Matsui addressed those affected, their families, government representatives, and international delegates at the city’s Peace Memorial Park. At 8:15 a.m., a bell sounded to mark the exact moment the atomic bomb detonated over Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. Attendees then observed a minute of silence in remembrance of those who perished due to the bombing and its subsequent impact.

Hiroshima marks 81st bomb anniversary with disarmament plea
Hiroshima’s anniversary keeps nuclear disarmament and survivor testimony in global focus.

During Hiroshima’s annual Peace Declaration, Matsui challenged the persistent dependence on nuclear deterrence. He called on leaders from nuclear-armed nations to recognize the human toll of atomic weapons and to push for disarmament. The mayor also encouraged policymakers to visit Hiroshima and Nagasaki to hear directly from hibakusha, the survivors of the two bombings. For decades, Hiroshima has prioritized survivor testimonies and nuclear abolition in its memorial activities and international peace initiatives.

Approximately 50,000 individuals attended the ceremony, with representatives from 121 countries and regions participating alongside the European Union. For the first time as Japan’s prime minister, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi attended Hiroshima’s memorial service. She stated that Japan aims for a pragmatic approach toward a world free of nuclear weapons. Takaichi also highlighted the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty as a vital framework for disarmament and reaffirmed Japan’s longstanding three non-nuclear principles.

    Nuclear diplomacy remains under tension

This event followed the 2026 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference, which concluded in May without a consensus on a comprehensive final document. It marked the third consecutive NPT review conference to end without agreement. Matsui pointed to the international climate, urging governments to intensify efforts for nuclear disarmament. While Japan supports the NPT framework, it has not signed the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and continues to be protected by the United States nuclear umbrella through their security alliance.

A message from Secretary-General António Guterres was delivered during the Hiroshima event by the UN disarmament chief, Izumi Nakamitsu. Guterres highlighted ongoing geopolitical divisions, rising mistrust, and renewed pressures on longstanding nuclear arms control agreements. He also pointed out that the decades-long reductions in global nuclear arsenals have begun to reverse. The United Nations urged increased diplomacy, dialogue, adherence to international law, and multilateral cooperation to promote nuclear disarmament.

Legacy of hibakusha remains central to Hiroshima’s message

Japan officially recognizes 91,105 atomic bomb survivors, known as hibakusha, whose average age now exceeds 86. The declining number of survivors has intensified efforts to safeguard their firsthand stories of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. For decades, survivors have shared their experiences of the blasts, fires, and radiation, advocating for the complete abolition of nuclear arms. Children representing Hiroshima also participated in Thursday’s ceremony, reaffirming their dedication to peace. The city continues to preserve survivor testimonies through memorial programs, museums, and public education initiatives.

By the end of 1945, the atomic bombing of Hiroshima resulted in an estimated 140,000 deaths. Three days later, a second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, causing approximately 70,000 deaths by year’s end. Japan announced its surrender on August 15, leading to the official conclusion of World War II in September. Hiroshima subsequently established Peace Memorial Park as a hub for remembrance and peace education. Eighty-one years after the attack, the city again emphasizes nuclear disarmament and the human costs of atomic warfare as core messages in its commemorations.
