BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – The European Commission has enhanced its efforts against the Ebola crisis by acquiring €2.1 million worth of PCR tests specifically for the Bundibugyo virus outbreak. This procurement includes open-platform diagnostic tests designed for laboratories to integrate seamlessly with their current systems. The European Health and Digital Executive Agency facilitated the procurement process. Shipments are scheduled to begin in August as health teams face a significant outbreak centered in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and impacting surrounding regions.

European Commission adds PCR support for Ebola outbreak
PCR testing support strengthens the international response to Ebola in DR Congo.

The World Health Organization will distribute these tests via its Hub for Global Health Emergencies Logistics located in Dubai. Following distribution, WHO will coordinate their deployment to key locations involved in the Ebola response. PCR testing enables labs to confirm infections rapidly and supports surveillance efforts around confirmed cases. Confirmed results are used by health teams to inform patient management, isolation procedures, and contact tracing. This latest supply effort bolsters laboratory capacity at a critical time, as authorities continue to monitor transmission across multiple provinces and health zones in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Previously, the European Commission arranged a separate package worth €2.5 million comprising rapid molecular point-of-care tests and diagnostic instruments. These tools will assist the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention in their regional response initiatives. Combining these efforts, the total diagnostic funding now reaches €4.6 million. These initiatives form part of a wider package of European support for nations battling the Bundibugyo Ebola emergency. Assistance includes medical supplies, preparedness initiatives, and public health resources aimed at strengthening responses in affected and neighboring regions.

Testing capacity expands amid ongoing outbreak

By August 12, WHO reported that the Democratic Republic of the Congo had confirmed 4,665 cases and recorded 2,184 deaths. The outbreak spans 54 health zones within six provinces, namely Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, Tshopo, and Bas-Uélé. WHO described this as the largest Ebola epidemic ever documented in the country. Continued transmission across linked geographic clusters poses persistent challenges for surveillance teams, laboratories, treatment facilities, and local health systems.

In its August update, WHO maintained a very high national risk assessment for the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It categorized the risk for neighboring nations as high and the global risk as low. After an additional meeting of the International Health Regulations Emergency Committee on August 24, WHO issued updated temporary guidelines. These recommendations focus on enhanced surveillance, case detection, infection prevention, clinical management, and community engagement. They also address public health measures related to mobility and large gatherings amid ongoing efforts to control the outbreak.

European health aid reaches €493 million

The European Commission announced the allocation of €493 million for emergency response measures, including vaccines, treatment, and health security efforts across the Great Lakes region and Uganda. European health agencies have also contributed to laboratory testing, surveillance, and preparedness activities. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control continues to classify the risk to European populations as very low. Ebola primarily spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids, which underscores the importance of rapid detection, safe clinical procedures, and effective infection control to limit transmission.

The Bundibugyo virus outbreak remains classified as a public health emergency of international concern under WHO’s international health regulations. Currently, there is no approved vaccine or specific treatment for Bundibugyo virus disease. Authorities rely on vigilant surveillance, rapid diagnosis, isolation, clinical care, infection prevention, and close contact monitoring. The new PCR testing supplies will enhance diagnostic capacity within this framework. WHO, Africa CDC, and national health authorities continue to coordinate efforts as countries aim to detect cases swiftly and uphold public health measures in affected communities.
