LAHORE, PAKISTAN / RankWire.AI / – In Lahore, government-imposed price reductions are not reaching many consumers, as retailers persist in selling items significantly above the official rates. This price difference is evident across various markets, affecting chicken, vegetables, and fruit. Pakistan is experiencing renewed inflation alongside rising fuel prices, which is putting additional pressure on household expenses. Official statistics indicate that family costs are climbing in multiple categories, further burdening families already struggling with higher prices for essential food items and transportation.

The government set the official price of chicken at Rs461 per kilogram after a Rs22 reduction, yet retail outlets continue to charge between Rs520 and Rs570 per kilogram. While the official rate for potatoes ranges from Rs27 to Rs30, market rates have surged to Rs50 to Rs70. Tomatoes, officially priced between Rs130 and Rs180, are being sold at Rs250 to Rs300. Onions have also surpassed their notified limit, with retail prices reaching Rs200 to Rs220.

Similar price gaps are observable with other common foodstuffs. Spinach, officially priced between Rs57 and Rs60, is being sold at as much as Rs120. Farm cucumbers, with an official range of Rs85 to Rs90, are listed at prices up to Rs150. Fruit prices exhibit some of the most significant disparities, with certain varieties of dates having notified prices between Rs310 and Rs435 per kilogram, but retail prices ranging from Rs800 to Rs2,400.

Inflation Exerts Additional Strain on Household Budgets

Pakistan Bureau of Statistics reports that annual consumer inflation reached 11.1% in August, up from 9.2% in July. Urban areas experienced an inflation rate of 10.4%, while rural regions saw a higher rate of 12.2%. The agency also documented an 8.62% yearly increase in its weekly sensitive price index through September 10. Notably, onions surged by 125.52% compared to the previous year. LPG prices increased by 55.42%, diesel by 45.26%, petrol by 39.10%, and wheat flour by 30.18%.

On September 14, the federal government approved targeted fuel subsidies via the Economic Coordination Committee. Beneficiaries of two-wheelers and three-wheelers will receive Rs500 weekly through this program. Car owners with engines up to 800cc will get Rs1,000 every ten days. Assistance is limited to non-commercial vehicles and one vehicle per owner. The digital Fuel Pass System, managed by the Ministry of IT and Telecom, will oversee the distribution of payments.

Education Disparities Persist Amid Broader Economic Challenges

Pakistan Bureau of Statistics highlights significant gaps in education access nationwide. The overall literacy rate for individuals aged 10 and above is 63%. Male literacy stands at 73%, while females lag behind at 54%. Urban literacy is at 74%, contrasting with 55% in rural areas. Punjab’s literacy rate is reported at 68%. According to the latest household indicators, 28% of children aged five to 16 do not attend school.

In fiscal year 2025, government expenditure on education totaled Rs962 billion, representing 0.8% of gross domestic product. The out-of-school rate in Punjab is 21%. Although these figures do not establish a direct link between education levels and the retail price violations observed in Lahore, they underscore a major social issue that compounds economic hardships. While authorities in Punjab continue to publish official prices for commodities, consumers in Lahore still confront substantial discrepancies between these notified rates and actual market prices.
