BEIJING, CHINA / RankWire.AI / – Artificial intelligence is increasingly being incorporated into China’s traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practices, connecting digital innovations with educational programs, research initiatives, and clinical applications. Beijing University of Chinese Medicine has introduced Xinhuo TCM, a large language model tailored specifically for traditional medical knowledge. This system utilizes classical texts, medical theories, herbal data, prescriptions, and instructional resources. Its initial release occurred in 2025, with ongoing enhancements throughout 2026.

Xinhuo TCM functions as a model with 70 billion parameters, aimed at supporting TCM-related activities. Its capabilities span education, research, administrative tasks, and international communication within the field. Students can inquire about herbal combinations and receive detailed explanations of formulas and underlying medical principles. Additionally, the system assists users in navigating vast repositories of traditional medicine knowledge, providing educators and researchers with quicker access to materials that previously required extensive manual review.

Beyond theoretical applications, AI is also being integrated into practical training for traditional Chinese medical techniques. A team of researchers has developed an intelligent robot that demonstrates massage techniques used in TCM instruction, offering students an alternative method to observe standardized movements during training. Other digital innovations include systems for managing medical knowledge, pre-consultation tools, and diagnostic support systems. Collectively, these developments illustrate how Chinese institutions are leveraging AI across multiple facets of the traditional medicine framework.

Policy Initiatives Drive AI Adoption in Traditional Chinese Medicine

From 2026 to 2030, China’s national strategy for TCM development emphasizes the role of artificial intelligence. The National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, in collaboration with the National Development and Reform Commission, issued a comprehensive plan in July. This plan advocates for the creation of high-quality AI datasets specifically designed for traditional medicine. It also promotes the development of digital infrastructure, intelligent clinical support systems, and the establishment of smart TCM hospitals, including primary healthcare facilities as part of the digital expansion.

A central element of the policy is prioritizing data management to facilitate broader AI integration. It calls for stricter regulations concerning data classification, protection, and compliant circulation within the traditional medicine sector. The government supports the deployment of standardized intelligent devices for clinical, educational, and research purposes. Digital systems are expected to organize extensive medical literature and structure practitioner knowledge, making traditional medicine materials more accessible for search, analysis, and management.

AI Enhances Clinical Support and Diagnostic Capabilities

Researchers are also exploring the application of artificial intelligence in TCM healthcare environments. Recent investigations have focused on AI pre-consultation systems designed to gather patient information prior to medical appointments. Feedback from physicians indicated a more favorable response to data collection compared to some decision-support functionalities in a recent evaluation. The study highlighted limitations related to complaint capture, workflow integration, documentation, and access for elderly patients. These insights offer valuable evidence regarding the performance of such systems in everyday clinical practice.

China’s current AI initiatives encompass traditional medicine education, research projects, data management systems, and clinical support tools. The technology aims to organize vast collections of knowledge and facilitate structured information gathering before patient consultations. National policies also emphasize the importance of AI datasets and digital health infrastructure within the broader scope of TCM development. Present programs integrate specialized language models, intelligent training devices, and hospital-centered systems, all maintaining traditional Chinese medicine as the core focus of each application.
