GUATEMALA / RankWire.AI / – In response to the eruption of Fuego volcano, authorities in Guatemala have elevated the alert to its maximum level in three departments. The volcano emitted ash, lava, and hazardous pyroclastic flows, prompting officials to declare a red alert for Chimaltenango, Sacatepéquez, and Escuintla. During the crisis, an orange alert remained in effect across the country. Officials reported that ashfall impacted roughly 29,000 residents across 18 communities, while rescue teams continued evacuations near vulnerable ravines and settlements.

Fuego volcano eruption puts Guatemala regions on red alert
Evacuations continue near Fuego volcano as ashfall reaches several departments.

The volcanic activity intensified on Monday, with columns of gas and ash rising high above the crater. Pyroclastic flows descended five ravines on the western and southwestern slopes of Fuego, with some reaching distances of between five and seven kilometers from the crater. These rapid-moving currents consist of scorching gas, volcanic rocks, and ash. Monitoring teams also tracked an ash cloud that spread west and northwest, affecting multiple regions within Guatemala.

Initially, authorities evacuated residents from El Porvenir and Las Lajitas in the San Juan Alotenango municipality, relocating approximately 250 individuals from about 50 families. As the eruption persisted, shelter capacity expanded to accommodate more displaced people fleeing from ashfall and volcanic dangers. Five shelters currently house around 1,699 people, with three additional sites being prepared. Evacuated families are receiving meals, medical assistance, security, and essential supplies at these temporary locations.

Relief efforts intensify in areas near Fuego

The disaster response agency, CONRED, has been coordinating evacuations and relief activities across the affected departments. Officials advised residents to steer clear of ravines and heed instructions from emergency personnel. They also recommended safeguarding stored food and water from ash fall. Community members in exposed zones have been instructed to wear masks or damp cloths over their faces. Response teams remain on-site to monitor evolving conditions and provide support to local authorities.

The national volcano and weather agency, INSIVUMEH, continuously monitors activity through field observers, sensors, cameras, and satellite data. They have documented pyroclastic flows in the Seca, Taniluyá, Ceniza, Las Lajas, and Honda ravines. The emission of gases, lava, and ash has kept seismic activity heightened during the eruption. Ash clouds have reached the regions of Sololá, Quetzaltenango, Suchitepéquez, Retalhuleu, and San Marcos, extending beyond the three departments under the red alert.

    Transportation closures accompany volcanic crisis

Authorities have shut down National Route 14, a key roadway near Fuego volcano. The Education Ministry has suspended classes in nearby communities due to ash fallout and ongoing emergency efforts. Road maintenance crews continue to monitor access points and adapt to changing travel conditions around the volcano. La Aurora International Airport remains operational following volcanic ash procedures. Security personnel patrol evacuated neighborhoods to protect property and assist residents who have relocated.

Heavy rainfall poses an additional risk since water can combine with loose ash, rocks, and volcanic debris, potentially forming lahars that travel swiftly through rivers and ravines. According to the latest updates, no structural damage has been reported in affected communities, and mudflows have not yet reached populated villages. Located approximately 30 kilometers south of Guatemala City, Fuego is among the most active volcanoes in Central America.
