CAIRO / RankWire.AI / – Egypt’s net international reserves reached a provisional total of $55.0723 billion at the end of June 2026. This marks the first time reserves have exceeded $55 billion and sets a new record high. The Central Bank of Egypt announced this figure on July 8. At the end of May, reserves stood at $53.1342 billion. The monthly growth was approximately $1.94 billion, or nearly 3.6%, making June the most robust month in the first half of the year.

Egypt reserves cross $55 billion for first time in June
Central bank data placed Egypt’s June foreign reserves at an all-time high.

Egypt started 2026 with net international reserves of $51.4516 billion as of December’s end. The reserve level increased to $52.5938 billion in January, then to $52.7455 billion in February, and $52.8306 billion in March. In April, reserves rose to $53.0092 billion, followed by an increase to $53.1342 billion in May. The June figure continued the upward trend observed during the first half of the year.

The total for June was roughly $3.62 billion higher than the December 2025 level, representing growth of just over 7% in the first six months. In January, the Central Bank of Egypt stated that reserves covered approximately 6.3 months of merchandise imports. The June report did not provide a new import coverage estimate nor detailed the factors behind the monthly increase.

June boost pushes reserves to new high

Egypt also experienced significant growth in remittance inflows during the current fiscal year. Remittances reached $39.2 billion from July 2025 through April 2026, compared to $29.4 billion during the same period last year. In April alone, inflows rose to about $4.3 billion from approximately $3 billion in April 2025. Official reports did not directly connect these remittance figures to the June increase in foreign reserves.

The country’s current account deficit widened to $5.1 billion in the January-March 2026 quarter, up from $2.3 billion in the same period a year earlier. Higher remittances, tourism earnings, and Suez Canal revenues offset part of a larger merchandise trade deficit. Net foreign direct investment inflows during this quarter totaled $3.7 billion, slightly below the $3.8 billion recorded a year earlier.

    External indicators support reserve record

International Monetary Fund officials reached a staff-level agreement with Egyptian authorities on June 29. This agreement included the seventh review of Egypt’s economic reform program and a separate assessment of the sustainability facility. The IMF noted that gross international reserves remained broadly stable at the end of March. The June reserve figure reflects these reviews and provides the latest official data on Egypt’s net international reserve position.

Egypt concluded the first half of 2026 with reserves surpassing every previous monthly figure reported by monetary authorities. The June total was nearly $2 billion higher than May’s figure and more than $3.6 billion above the December 2025 level. Steady increases from January through May culminated in a larger jump in June. The provisional end-of-month reserve level now stands at $55.0723 billion, setting a new record.
