SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – OpenAI is broadening the accessibility of ChatGPT by enabling Free and Go users to engage in unlimited text conversations with GPT-5.6 Luna. The company announced that this update will start next week and will be subject to safeguards against misuse. During the current rollout, GPT-5.6 Luna also becomes the default model for these accounts. Additionally, free-tier users will see a new Think button, allowing the system to dedicate more time to complex queries before responding.

This new access is limited to text interactions and does not eliminate all usage restrictions across ChatGPT. OpenAI clarified that limits will still be in place for file uploads, image generation, and other tools requiring extra processing. The Think feature will arrive alongside the unlimited messaging capacity next week, providing GPT-5.6 Luna with additional reasoning time for tasks that demand more analysis. The company continues to enforce separate controls for features beyond standard text chats, including tools available under different usage allowances.

OpenAI introduced GPT-5.6 as a suite of models comprising Luna, Sol, and Terra. Among these, Luna offers a faster and more cost-effective option. The company stated that ChatGPT now reaches approximately one billion weekly users across various activities such as searches, research, planning, writing, and more. With this update, users on Free and Go plans will have Luna as their primary ChatGPT model. The rollout extends access to the main chat service while maintaining tool-specific limitations.

Paid Subscribers Get an Enhanced Reasoning Model

Subscribers of ChatGPT Plus and Pro are also receiving an upgraded version of GPT-5.6 Sol for everyday use. Sol supports both rapid responses and in-depth reasoning within the paid tier. OpenAI mentioned that this update results in more focused answers and minimizes unnecessary details when a straightforward reply suffices. Additionally, subscribers will now have access to a reasoning slider across web, mobile, and desktop platforms. This feature enables users to control the amount of processing ChatGPT applies to research, planning, coding, writing, and other tasks.

The company also reported a significant reduction in factual errors during internal assessments of its latest models. Tests involved financial, medical, and legal prompts that required precise factual responses. OpenAI stated that answers containing at least one factual mistake decreased by approximately 62% with GPT-5.6 Luna compared to GPT-5.5 Instant. For GPT-5.6 Sol, the reduction was about 68%. The firm also noted improvements in Sol’s handling of dates, numbers, sources, rules, and assumptions when accuracy was crucial.

Unlimited Messaging Maintains Separate Safety Protocols

OpenAI emphasized that its latest ChatGPT models incorporate additional safeguards for users believed to be under 18. These measures aim to prevent romantic roleplay, age-restricted challenges, and claims that could substitute real-world relationships. The models also include boundaries related to sexual content, eating disorders, dangerous activities, restricted substances, and graphic violence. The company mentioned that new evaluations have been added for responses involving younger users. The unlimited text conversations will continue to operate within existing abuse safeguards when the expanded access reaches Free and Go accounts.

This update focuses on the core ChatGPT experience and does not extend to every OpenAI product utilizing GPT-5. The company clarified that GPT-5.6 Sol versions used in ChatGPT Work and Codex will remain unchanged in this release. Paid users can now access the updated Sol model with reasoning controls, while Free and Go users will have Luna as their default model this week. The unlimited text chats and the Think button will be available next week, with separate limits still applying to images, uploads, and other features.
