Austria’s prior benchmark was a 24-day heatwave in July and August 2013, which measured about 22,100 area-degree days across land areas below 1,500 meters elevation.
The early summer heatwave coincided with a significant increase in deaths related to heat. The Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety projected 395 such fatalities during June 2026, marking the highest June figure recorded since the agency started tracking this data.
