DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO / RankWire.AI / – The World Health Organization reports that the Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo could be contained within three months if adequate resources are allocated to the response efforts. Official data up to Aug. 16 show a total of 5,021 confirmed cases and 2,378 fatalities. The outbreak has affected six provinces and 55 health zones, with a case fatality rate around 47%. This makes it the most deadly Ebola outbreak ever recorded in the country.

Thierno Baldé, the incident manager for WHO, emphasized that the timeline for containment hinges on maintaining sufficient staffing, supplies, and operational support. Currently, about $69.3 million of the $115 million needed has been mobilized. Health teams have expanded capacity by adding over 400 treatment beds within two weeks, while deploying 100 additional epidemiologists and over 500 community health workers. These workers are essential for surveillance, contact tracing, case detection, and referrals. The effort also depends on ambulances, vehicles, medical supplies, and trained personnel operating across affected zones.

Transmission has now reached Bas-Uélé, marking it as the sixth province impacted by the outbreak. Ituri remains the primary transmission hotspot as of mid-August, accounting for the majority of confirmed cases and deaths. Officials highlighted that many recent infections had no identifiable link to known patients, underlining the urgent need for faster detection and contact monitoring. To address this, teams have intensified surveillance activities to identify cases earlier and facilitate swift transfers to treatment centers.

Efforts extend across multiple affected regions

The Ministry of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Welfare of the Democratic Republic of the Congo announced the outbreak on May 15. Laboratory testing confirmed the presence of the Bundibugyo virus, one of the viruses responsible for Ebola disease. Since the virus was first identified in 1976, the country has experienced 17 Ebola outbreaks. Additionally, Uganda has reported cases linked to the broader outbreak, with 20 confirmed infections and two deaths. No new cases have been reported there since June 21.

Currently, no licensed vaccine or approved specific treatment exists for Bundibugyo virus disease. Medical management focuses on early diagnosis, supportive care, infection prevention, and rapid contact tracing. Response efforts also include safe burials and community outreach to limit further spread. Local health workers assist in identifying suspected cases and guiding patients to treatment facilities. Authorities have provided hygiene supplies and trained personnel in affected communities. Early supportive care continues to be vital for those developing Ebola symptoms.

Monitoring efforts and funding are key to controlling the outbreak

Contact tracing saw improvements in August but still lagged behind public health goals in some areas. By Aug. 12, response teams monitored 17,460 of the 20,740 contacts listed, roughly 84%. Additional epidemiologists have joined the efforts to enhance detection and reduce delays between symptom onset and treatment initiation. Community health workers actively report suspected cases and facilitate access to medical care. Medical personnel have faced significant risks, with over 150 infections among healthcare workers reported by early August.

On May 17, the outbreak was declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Both national authorities and international health partners continue laboratory testing, providing clinical care, conducting surveillance, ensuring safe burials, and engaging communities. Recent weekly reports indicate a rise in confirmed cases and fatalities compared to previous periods. Baldé noted that the three-month containment estimate relies heavily on securing the necessary resources to sustain these operations. Despite challenges, teams persist in working within areas affected by insecurity and disruptions to health services.
