MENA Newswire News Desk: Abu Dhabi Airports has announced the early reopening of the Northern Runway (13L/31R) at Zayed International Airport, following a successful rehabilitation project. The runway is now fully operational for both arrivals and departures, marking a significant milestone in the airport’s ongoing modernization efforts. The Northern Runway Rehabilitation project involved a range of upgrades aimed at enhancing the runway’s durability and safety.

Key improvements include the application of 210,000 tonnes of asphalt for reinforcement and resurfacing. In addition, advanced technology was introduced, such as a new ground visibility monitoring system and a state-of-the-art Instrument Landing System (ILS) to increase operational precision. Over 1,200 halogen airfield lights were also replaced with energy-efficient LED technology to reduce the airport’s environmental footprint.

This transition to LED lighting highlights Abu Dhabi Airports’ commitment to sustainability, aligning with global efforts to reduce energy consumption in the aviation industry. The enhanced navigational aids, including the ILS and the new Runway Visual Range (RVR) system, are expected to improve safety and operational efficiency, particularly during challenging weather conditions.

Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director General of the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), praised the project, stating, “The Northern Runway Rehabilitation Project is a testament to Abu Dhabi Airports’ strategic planning and the UAE’s dedication to advancing aviation infrastructure. This development enhances the UAE’s global standing in the aviation sector, aligning with the nation’s vision for long-term growth and prosperity.”

Elena Sorlini, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Abu Dhabi Airports, added, “Completing the Northern Runway Rehabilitation Project ahead of schedule reflects our commitment to operational excellence. The upgraded infrastructure will allow us to handle increased air traffic and optimize the airport’s capacity, ensuring we continue to meet growing demand.”

The early reopening of the Northern Runway allows Zayed International Airport to return to dual-runway operations, improving the airport’s ability to manage growing airline traffic. During the rehabilitation period, the airport operated solely on its Southern Runway, successfully managing the increased air traffic without any disruptions to daily operations. Abu Dhabi Airports‘ commitment to enhancing infrastructure through this project further solidifies Zayed International Airport‘s reputation as a leading global aviation hub, offering cutting-edge safety and operational standards.
