This procurement includes open-platform diagnostic tests designed for laboratories to integrate seamlessly with their current systems. The European Health and Digital Executive Agency facilitated the procurement process. Shipments are scheduled to begin in August as health teams face a significant outbreak centered in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and impacting surrounding regions.

The World Health Organization will distribute these tests via its Hub for Global Health Emergencies Logistics located in Dubai. Following distribution, WHO will coordinate their deployment to key locations involved in the Ebola response. PCR testing enables labs to confirm infections rapidly and supports surveillance efforts around confirmed cases. Confirmed results are used by health teams to inform patient management, isolation procedures, and contact tracing. Previously, the European Commission arranged a separate package worth €2.5 million comprising rapid molecular point-of-care tests and diagnostic instruments. These tools will assist the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention in their regional response initiatives. Combining these efforts, the total diagnostic funding now reaches €4.6 million. These initiatives form part of a wider package of European support for nations battling the Bundibugyo Ebola emergency. Assistance includes medical supplies, preparedness initiatives, and public health resources aimed at strengthening responses in affected and neighboring regions.
Testing capacity expands amid ongoing outbreak

The outbreak spans 54 health zones within six provinces, namely Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, Tshopo, and Bas-Uélé. The European Commission announced the allocation of €493 million for emergency response measures, including vaccines, treatment, and health security efforts across the Great Lakes region and Uganda. European health agencies have also contributed to laboratory testing, surveillance, and preparedness activities. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control continues to classify the risk to European populations as very low.
